King Johns Guide To BIN & Cue  Files

The .Bin files are large files that contain all the files present on a CD, they are one large file and an exact copy of the original CD. This means they also store information on the type of CD made its volume label and format etc.

When a BIn file is used to re-construct a CD, it will be burned to match the original. If that CD was a home Movie VCD then the BIN file will re-produce a VCD

The original Bin files were produced by CDRWin which also created a "Cue" file. The cue file is a small text file which contains extra information for the burning program.

If the BIN file was located at c:\testmovies and a cue file was created at the same location, then the simple cue file would read as follows.

FILE "name of file.bin" BINARY
TRACK 01 MODE2/2352
INDEX 01 00:00:00
TRACK 02 MODE2/2352
INDEX 00 00:04:00
INDEX 01 00:06:00

Burning to CD

Programs that can be used to burn BIN files are CdrWin, Nero or Fireburner

Nero
Start Nero, select File > Burn Image, locate the .cue file you have and double click it. A dialog box will come up, for anything other than music make sure you select Disk-At-Once (DAO).
CDRWIN
Start CDRWin, select the button on the top left, choose Load CueSheet, Click Start Recording.
Fireburner:
Click the button on the bottom left corner  (Visual Cue Burner/Bebchunker), Click the right mouse button and select Load Tracks From Cue and select the correct .CUE file, click the right mouse button again and select "Burn/Test Burn", choose Disk At Once, disable "test Burn" and "Multisession" Clock OK.

Errors
The most common error you will get is when the cue file pints to an incorrect path, open the cue file in notepad and look at the first line, if it includes a path location, just remove the path, make sure its saved in the same location as the Bin file.

The original CD might have been a SVCD, but you can only play VCD's so if you re-produced the SVCD CD by burning the BIN file, this disk would be no use to you other than being able to copy the .mpeg (Mpeg 2) file back onto your hard drive for conversion. You may be able to use a CDR-W and avoid wasting a CD

However there are programs around that let you open up BIN files and extract the contents, in the case of a SVCD you will see a large .mpg file or for VCD there will be a .dat file.

Programs to Extract files from BIN formats

VCDGear
This program will allow you to extract MPEG streams from CD images, convert VCD files to MPEG, correct MPEG errors, and more.
Daemon Tools:
This program creates a virtual drive on your PC which will allow you to "mount" the .cue file and use whatever is in the .bin file without having to burn it to a cd.
ISOBuster
This program will allow you to "bust" open the .bin file and extract the files within the .bin.
Cdmage
This program also lets you extract the contents of the BIN file
