King Johns Guide using Clone DVD

Just a simple guide using this program, note you should only make a back up of DVD's you own the copyright of, and not use this guide for any illegal activities, like copying copyright protected work.

If you want more control, then use smart ripper to copy your DVD to your hard drive first, then use clone to make the DVD or use it to make an image, then a program like Nero to burn the image.

Some people have said their DVD writer wont work with Clone DVD, so this guide is constructed to show alternative ways of using this program, along with programs you already use and like.

In this example, I will use clone to make ISO files which can then be used later with Nero.

Start smart ripper, and let it read the contents of the DVD. You may need to play the DVD first, then run the program. When Smart ripper shows its next screen, click the FILES button, then the "all" to select all the files.

Change the target to your hard drive and make a folder called VIDEO_TS this is where the files will be saved. Click the backup button when your ready.

When its finished ripping the contents of your DVD your ready to use Clone DVD

Note:
If you don't want all the VOB files, then don't rip them with smart ripper

Start Clone DVD and click the "....." to select your source, in this example it showing D:\ however you may have to select D:\VIDEO_TS as the location you saved your files.

When you have selected the source, you will see the size of the disk, on single layer DVD you have 4.7Gb below it shows the file size of 6.9Gb (2) so you need to split the DVD into 2 disks 2.8Gb per disk. If this is not what you want, go back to smart ripper and remove those unwanted VOB files.

You can play the VOB files from your hard drive, if you have a program like Power DVD, or "Nero Show Time" with its Mpeg 2 DVD plug-in or even WMP. These will show you if you need the VOB files or not.

Having selected the split, I have chosen to make an ISO on my hard drive, later to be used with Nero to burn the DVD. Remember if your making one large file, you need to have a NTFS partitioned hard drive, you have a limit of 4Gb on a FAT 32 partitioned hard drive.

When your ready click Copy now.

Although this guide may look rather strange to some people, there are very good reasons for using Clone DVD this way, and I am sure you will use Clone DVD other ways with equal success.

Note
If you have any programs running like anydvd you may need to disable them.

Note:
Clone DVD does compress the files, EVEN if they don't need compressing. Use IFOEDIT to strip all but the 6 channel subs and audio to shrink your DVD, however Clone may still compress the video when it don't need to do so.

When you have a Dual Layer disk and several audio tracks, the file size is now over 4.37 Gb, when you now deselect those extra audio tracks in Clone DVD, It will output a file size taking into account that those extra audio tracks are there, even if they are not. This will cause Clone DVD to unnecessarily compress the files.

Clone DVD will output the correct file sizes on a single layer disk because the compression bar will still show 100%that's because with all audio tracks selected the bar is still at 100%
