King Johns Guide to IFO edit.. quickie..

A lot of people don't want to spend a lot of time learning to use IFO Edit, however this guide shows a quick method of fixing a playback problem. The problem may have been made with Elaborate Bytes Clone DVD or Nero's DVD backup.

Explanation

If you use Elaborate Bytes Clone DVD to make a backup of your DVD, removing sections you don't want, while maintaining the menu !, you will have those deleted sections made into blank sequences, if Nero is used you have the option to replace them with a small animated sequence or a fixed image. The will result in several blank images, or it may look as if the DVD is searching for something.

Take a typical DVD, shrinking to make it fit

1, Warning message (0.2GB)
2, Advertisement (1.2GB)
3, Main movie (4.2GB)
4, Extra (1.2GB)
5, Extra (1.2GB)

Over size :) so you need to remove something, trying to keep the movie at zero compression (100%)

If you want to keep the DVD menu, but remove items 1,2,4,5 above, then in order to maintain the disks menu structure, those chapters or titles have to be replaced not simply removed.

With Elaborate Bytes Clone DVD it will make a short blank section, much smaller in size than the original, this might them make the main movie fit.

With Nero, it can replace them with a fixed image, or a badly made animated sequence (very jumpy)

So when the disk is played, a small sequence video is shown (1 above) then another small sequence video (2 above) before finally playing the DVD's menu or movie. The menu is retained so you can use its chapter selection. ?

This guide will show you how to jump over those two sections and play the DVD's main movie or jump to the menu. Remember what the original DVD will play, will different with each disk, play your converted movie to see what happens first, then study the VIDEO_TS.IFO file to see what its doing..

1, Rip your DVD to your hard drive (Smart Ripper)
2, Use Clone DVD to remove any warnings, or other items that make the layout too large to fit on a blank DVD
3, Load IFO EDIT and open the file called VIDEO_TS.IFO located in Clone DVD's output folder.

At the top of the list click the + sign next to VMGM_MAT then click First Play PGC .
Now look in the bottom window for the 1. Pre Command (there may be more, try the last one in the list)

Right click that item and select Edit command

Make a note of its current settings, or simply make a backup of the VIDEO_TS.IFO and VIDEO_TS.BUP
just in case you mess it up :)

Now select a new command from the list, I use (JumpSS_VMGM) Jump to VideoManager Menu and Title-Menu

Now save and overwrite the original,

Use Power DVD or Nero Player, to play the DVD on your hard drive, if all is well it should start playing the menu, and has jumped over the items you have removed.

1, Warning message (0.1)
2, Advertisement (0.1)
3, Main movie (4.2GB)
4, Extra ((0.1)
5, Extra (0.1)

Now the DVD will start from 3 above or its main title menu, no more jumpy playbacks or black sequences :)

Please don't use this guide on DVD's unless you have permission to do so from the copyright owners, if the DVD is a wedding, birthday, with lots of start-up items, make sure the author has given you permission to remove the sequences.
