Quick Settings

Right Click Taskbar icon, Select Norton Personal Firewall

From the next screen you can set up your personal preferences. The following items are my personal settings, you may wish to change them slightly.

Start by selecting "Status & Settings" from the left hand column, then "Personal Firewall" from the middle. Now click the "configure" button at the bottom right.

You have a TAB selection page, starting from the left, click the "Personal Firewall" from there you can configure the level of protection you want.

Click the Custom level Button to get more settings, you wont need to change those, unless you want to block all Java and JavaScript's (not recommended) as that would cause problems with some Internet sites.

Click OK, then click the next TAB "Program Control" From here you can switch off the automatic program control, then when ever there is a security breach you will need to select block access, or allow access. If you turn this back on, some things will be blocked/allowed without you knowing!!.

You can also see a list of programs that already have rules set for them, scroll though the list, and change anything you don't like >> "Norton Live Update" ?

If you run a local network (Have several PC's networked together) click the "Home Networking" TAB then click the "Wizard" button to automatically detect your home network. Make sure your PC's are all on and networked before you do this.

The next TAB "Advanced" is usually ok at default settings, but take a look at the rules, to make sure none of the default settings don't block your local network. Clock OK to return to the main page.

From the middle select "Intrusion Detection" and again click the configure button to check its settings. If you have a router, you probably wont see any IP addresses in the block list, but if you want to add an IP address, this is the place to do it. Click the IP addresses to add those you wish to block.

Note:
If you use KaZaA and block those IP addresses, those people wont be able to download anything from you.

Return to the main screen and click the "Statistics" from there you can view your firewall logs, and what's going on within your own network. Return to the main screen..

From the top of the main screen in the menu items select "options" > "Personal Firewall" from here you can switch off that alert tracker that keeps popping out when there is some activity. Next is Live update, Which I have switched off (I manually run this) Next is "Firewall" from there you can see the ports Norton watches, if you don't want it to monitor web pages, remove port 80 out of the list. (This also stops add blocking)

Next is Web content, it is this location you can add web site locations, if they don't start with www just leave out the http:// and put the rest in, ending with .com etc

If you have the ad blocker switched on, but some pages don't show all the images, you can add that site to this list, then configure its settings to block scripts etc. If you highlight the word (defaults) you can set all the defaults for all sites. Click OK when your finished

Well that was a brief introduction, if at anytime things go wrong, you can always right click the taskbar icon and select disable, just to make sure its not your ISP that's giving you problems.
