The RAR file is a compressed file, just like the
original ARC and ZIP files a large file can be compressed down by more than
half. The use of RAR files for home movies have become popular because the movie
can be compressed and split up into smaller files.
Programs Needed
The original WinRar files were named .rar to r04
if the files were split into 5 chunks

This shows the original file has been split into 4
chunks, in order to re-construct the original file, you will need WinRar and
right click the "HomeMovie.rar" file to decompress. WinRAR will load Parts 1-4
automatically and re-create the original file. Compressing movies wont achieve
much as they are already compressed using a compression codec, however splitting
them into smaller chunks to send to your friends will help with slow download
speeds.
The New versions of WinRar will also let you make
self extracting files, when these types are constructed the first file wont be
HomeMovie.rar it will now be HomeMovie.exe then you wont need Winrar to extract
the files.
In the above example I have a Testmovie.avi its
size is 11.256Mb I have used WinRar to split it into 447K chunks, in the newer
versions of WinRar the files are labelled Part01 to Part11, in this example
Testmovie.part01.rar is the main file I would use to re-construct the original
file.
When you have re-constructed the file, it may be
in another format other than video types. Some people make a copy of a movie
disk they made and save the image to their hard drive, that image could be a BIN
file, then the BIN file is split into chunks, so when they are re-constructed
you may need to use some other program to get the AVI or Mpeg movie.
It is not unknown for people to "Zip" up files
with WinZip, then use WinRar to split them up, when reconstructing you may need
to go though different stages to reach the desired file.

extract (WinRar)

extract (WinZip)
