KingJohns Guide Splitting AVI

Splitting AVI home movies can be does easily with programs like Vdub, this guide gives the basic information needed to do this task without causing problems with your AVI. You need to make sure the file is free from bad frames first.

See also, KingJohns Guide to bad frames V2

Now that you have your home movie with no bad frames, its now a simple matter of using Vdub to load and split an AVI.

If you get the dreaded warning !

Then use Vdub Mp3 instead of the regular Vdub

Load your AVI, and move to the end to get the total number of frames

Then divide that number by 2 to get the half way mark
In this example the above file says "Frame 45854 (0:50:59.975)"
So 45854/2 = 22927

Now select edit > Beginning
This will move the slider back to the start of the movie, click the black arrow to mark this as the start

Now select edit > Go To > 22927
The slider will now jump to that location, but before you mark this as end, you need to click the yellow keyframe forward once

Then mark this as the end with the black arrow

You will now see a section marked ready to be saved.

Select Video > Direct stream Copy
Select Audio > Direct stream Copy
Select File > Save as AVI and name this part1.avi

Now do the same with part 2, select Go To > 22927

Press the yellow key frame back once then mark this as start

Now select Edit > End and mark that as the end

You will now see the next section marked and ready to save

Select Video > Direct stream Copy
Select Audio > Direct stream Copy
Select File > Save as AVI and name this part2.avi

This method does not split the home movie exactly in half, some other versions of Vdub like Nandub (No longer supported) may be able to split it by file size, However I am keen to continue to recommend the regular Vdub with its continued support and updates. I still recommend Vdub MP3, as so far it has not presented any problems.

As mentioned above, you should not work on any file that has problems, you need to fix those problems before you try any of this work. naturally you need to have installed any supporting codecs to be able to load your AVI, however since the file save is done using streaming, you wont need to worry about conversions, as the file is being saved "As Is" if it happens to contain an AC3 sound track, that will be saved with the video unchanged.

Update, Missing Audio
There have been a few AVI's with missing audio at the end, reports are about 6 seconds, Those 6 seconds of "Blank" do not have a silent audio stream, so the audio is missing.
Any attempt to save video and audio, would then give a big difference in length (In this case 6 seconds). If you see a big difference when loading the stream, then you will know you have the missing audio stream.
Vdub MP3
Go to the end of the AVI, and come back a few minutes then press play, press stop as soon as the audio is not heard, then click the keyframe back once and mark that as start. Then move to the end of the home movie and mark that as end. Delete those frames and save out another copy using video/audio direct stream copy. You have now removed the frames that have no audio, and can reload that back to work on as normal.
