Backing Up / Restoring Windows Registry
Windows 95 ONLY
Backing up Windows Registry - This ONLY applies to Windows 95.
To back up and restore the Windows 95 registry files, use one of the following methods:
Method 1
To back up your registry files, follow these steps:
1. Restart your computer. Press the F8 key when you see the "Starting Windows 95" message, and then choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only from the Startup menu.
2. At the command prompt type the following lines, pressing ENTER after each line:
cd\
cd windows
attrib -r -h -s system.dat
attrib -r -h -s user.dat
copy system.dat *.bu NOTE there is a space between the .dat and the * that IS important!!!
copy user.dat *.bu NOTE there is a space between the .dat and * that IS important!!!
NOTE: This procedure assumes you do not have any files named System.bu or User.bu. If you do have files by this name, such as a backup of the System.ini file, select a file name extension that is not currently in use.
3. Restart your computer.
To restore your registry files, follow these steps:

3. Restart your computer.
Notes:
You may want to back up more than one version of the registry in case the registry becomes damaged but the damage is not detected until later. If you want to do this, when you are following the steps above, replace the .bu extension with .bu1, .bu2, and so on.
If you have more than one hard disk or a network drive is available, you may want to copy the backup files to the other drive so the backup files do not reside in the same location as the original registry files.
Method 2
You can use the Windows 95 Emergency Recovery Utility to create a backup of your system configuration and registry files and restore these files in case a problem should occur.
Backing Up / Restoring Windows
Windows 98 / 98SE / Me ONLY
Manually Backing up your Windows Registry - This ONLY applies to Windows 98 / 98SE and Me
There may be situations where you need to edit the Windows registry. Before you edit the registry, you should make a backup copy of the registry using the following steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type scanregw, and then click OK.
2. When you receive a prompt to back up the registry, click Yes.
3. When you receive the "Backup complete" message, click OK.
NOTE: When you back up the registry, the Rb0x.cab file is created in the Windows\Sysbckup folder (where x is a number from 0 to 5). Each time you back up the registry, the oldest Rb0x.cab file is overwritten. Windows Registry Checker backs up the System.dat, User.dat, System.ini, and Win.ini files, as well as registry configuration information (including user account information, protocol bindings, software program settings, and user preferences).
Manually Restoring Windows Registry- This ONLY applies to Windows 98 / 98SE and Me
Under normal circumstances, Windows is capable of detecting and recovering from registry errors automatically. If Windows is incapable of this, a previous copy of the registry can be restored manually. Windows makes and stores a backup of the registry when you start your computer successfully each day. By default, five previous copies or the registry are stored. To restore one of these previous copies:
1. Start your computer, press and hold CTRL, and then choose Safe Mode Command Prompt Only from the Windows 98 Startup menu. If you are running Windows Me, start your computer with the startup disk.
2. At the MS-DOS prompt, type cd\ and then press the ENTER key then cd\windows\command, and then press ENTER. Where windows is the name of the folder in which Windows is installed.
3. At the C: prompt, type scanreg /restore, and then press ENTER. NOTE the space between scanreg and / it is important
4. Select the previous registry you want to restore, and then press ENTER. NOTE: A properly working registry has the word "Started" next to the date.
5. When you receive notification that you restored a properly working registry, press ENTER to restart your computer.
One-click Shutdown
windows Me
For this, you will need to create a shortcut. In the path name, type in C:\windows\rundll.exe user.exe.exitwindows. You can also add this shortcut to your quick launch bar. Now, if you click on the shortcut, the machine shuts down instantly.
Hiding a desktop icon
windows 98
It is not easy to remove icons, such as My Computer, from your desktop, but they can be hidden. To do this, create a 32 x 32 pixel image in Paint, with the same colour as your desktop background. When creating the image in Paint, go to the Image menu, click on Attributes and set the size as 32 x 32 pixels. Use the Fill tool to fill in the desktop background colour. Save the image with a .ico extension. Now, right click on the desktop, and select Properties. This will open the Display Properties settings. Go to the Effects tab, select the My Computer icon, and click on Change Icon. Finally, specify the path to the file you just created, and press the Apply button. You will not see the My Computer icon anymore, but the text will still be there. To get rid of this, right click on the My Computer text, select Rename, and rename it to [Spacebar], so that it will appear blank. You have to do this, as Windows needs at least a single character to name an icon.
